The ever-popular adult Spelling Bee hosted by the Bainbridge Library happens in just two days, and the teams are studiously practicing their many hard-to-spell words, like rubefacient, erythrophobia, and phaeocrous, without bothering to learn what they mean. I also did not bother. But these words are hard to spell and so I’m confident they will be among the night’s challenges.
Meanwhile, the lazier among us are studiously napping to prepare attend the event just for the fun of watching others struggle to spell and, also, to have wine and dessert, which are included with tickets.
This year’s event is run by the women. Actor Bhama Roget of The Edge Improv and the entertaining and often inappropriate Internet series Wrecked, will be the night’s emcee. BPL Branch Manager Rebecca Judd is the night’s Queen Bee, meaning she will deliver the words to be spelled. Former COBI Municipal Judge Kate Carruthers will be one of the, well, judges, joined by Faith Chapel, Superintendent of the Bainbridge Island School District, and Anne Blair, La Grande Mayor of Bainbridge Island.
Proceeds from the event will help maintain the library’s building and grounds. Tickets are $15 online and $20 at the door. Get tickets here.
The event happens this Saturday, September 19, at Bainbridge Performing Arts, 200 Madison Ave. N., from 7 to 10 p.m.
